Opel Astra Sports Tourer: perfection down to the smallest detail

The new Opel Astra Sports Tourer is a unique design creation, yet versatile for everyday use. The next generation of the best-selling compact car class is Opel’s first electrified station wagon and the first car with a new brand identity, the Opel Vizor. In addition, the sports car from Rüsselsheim will be available as an option in a stylish two-tone paint scheme for the body and roof. Like the five-door Astra that will soon be available in dealerships, the interior of the Astra Sports Tourer is also a leap forward into the future in every way. For the first time, owners will experience the all-digital Pure Panel cockpit, the next generation of connected and intuitive Human Machine Interface (HMI).

“With its bold and clean design on both the interior and exterior, our new Astra Sports Tourer changes the perception: precise, high quality and at the same time extremely practical. Every line, every detail is perfectly worked out. This turns the model into a stylish sports car that evokes emotions,” says Mark Adams, vice president of Opel Design.

Bold and clean design: OpelVizor and two-tone paint job highlight the look

Like the five-door Astra hatchback, the Opel Astra Sports Tourer has a strong and stable posture. Elongated lines accentuate the sporty look. The main highlight of the exterior is the characteristic new face of the brand — Opel Vizor in front of the car. As a central exterior design element, it follows the idea of the Opel Compass, where the vertical and horizontal axes — the sharp bonnet crease and wing-shaped headlights — intersect with the Opel Blitz emblem in the middle. Spanning the front, making the new Astra wider, the Vizor seamlessly integrates new technologies such as optional ultra-thin Intelli-Lux LED® headlights and a 360-degree Intelli-Vision front camera.

Seen from the side, the Astra Sports Tourer looks sporty and dynamic. The characteristic curves of the doors give the car a distinctive, daring look, emphasizing its firm grip on the road. The pronounced forward lean of the wide C-pillars emphasizes the Sports Tourer’s jump-ready stance. At the rear, the Opel Compass concept is echoed by the centrally mounted Blitz light, vertical brake light and ultra-slim LED taillights found on all Astra models.

Emotions in everyday life: beautiful design can also be practical

Captivating emotions born of design, but also practicality — the new Astra Sports Tourer combines the best of both. The goal of the designers of the new model is to make it truly attractive, while, like all its predecessors, to take full advantage of its proven advantage — the convenience of everyday use.

Mission accomplished: with technical dimensions of 4642x1860x1480 millimeters (L x W x H) and a loading height of around 600 mm, the Astra Sports Tourer reinforces Opel’s leading reputation in the sector. To ensure a low load threshold, the registration number is located not on the bumper — unlike the five-door model — but on the tailgate. This makes it easy to load the fully flat rear compartment with luggage or gear. And despite the significantly longer wheelbase of 2,732 mm (+70 mm), even 57 mm longer than the new Astra hatchback and improving passenger comfort, the Astra Sports Tourer is 60 mm shorter than the outgoing model, thanks to a particularly short front overhang. .

“Despite its compact size, the Astra Sports Tourer looks as long as the Insignia, even though it’s actually shorter. We achieve this visual impression by using flowing, elegant lines combined with a distinct two-tone roof finish that is available for the first time in the compact wagon class,” says Mark Adams. The color contrast option for the roof and bodywork is new to the Astra Sports Tourer but familiar in the compact wagon segment. This color scheme gives the new model an even more elegant and stable look on the road.

«Total detox»: PurePanel with full connectivity and intuitive interface

The clean and bold design is also reflected in the interior design of the model. The all-digital, driver-focused Pure Panel cockpit takes it to a whole new world. The Human Machine Interface (HMI) offers customers an intuitive interface. The Pure Panel (fully glazed depending on the variant) features two horizontal 10-inch displays integrated along with a driver’s side air vent.

“The fully glazed surface of the panel is what I call ‘glass to the edge’ where the glass reaches the edges of the Pure Panel. This creates an extremely modern and progressive coupe look,” says Opel Vice President of Design. Thanks to the protective coating, glare and reflections from the windshield are prevented. The dashboard does not have a visor over the displays and touchscreens, as in most car models.

«Total detox» is the main principle followed in the interior design of the Astra Sport Tourer. Opel designers and engineers have gone to great lengths to ensure that the driver gets all the information and useful control options they need without being burdened with redundant data or features. With minimal physical controls in the form of elegant keys, Pure Panel strikes the perfect balance between digitization and intuitive operation, with no annoying visual cues and no need for submenus. Opel has never been so intuitive and easy to operate, allowing you to fully concentrate on driving and on the road.

Powered by the Snapdragon® Cockpit, the all-digital Pure Panel provides an intuitive experience with artificial intelligence, driver and passenger personalization, virtual vehicle assistance, natural voice control, language understanding and adaptive interfaces.

The new Astra Sports Tourer eliminates the need for mobile phone charging cables as the next-generation multimedia infotainment system can be connected to Apple CarPlay and Android Auto wireless networks via compatible smartphones. And here the maxim is to offer a clean, full-featured high-tech design that does not look cold and impersonal, but brings a sense of security and comfort.
